It’s a bird, it’s a plane.

The past two nights I’ve had very poor sleep. My brother is back in the hospital being evaluated, tension has been strong in my house, and over really the past year I’ve been thinking about taking a step back from one of my leadership roles at church. I think all of that has contributed to my sleep issues.

Last night I had a weird dream and I think it was somewhat interesting so I’m going to share.

Over really the past month or two, I’ve had sporadic dreams where I’m trying to catch a plane in an airport but everything is delayed or I was too late and missed it.

Last night I was in the airport, and going through bag check and they opened a bonsai tree I had brought with me. It was covered in cellophane and I told them I hadn’t opened it yet. The one man unwrapped the cellophane and out of nowhere when a bird squeezes itself out and feathers fall everywhere.

According to

  • To dream that you miss your flight or a connection or that it was cancelled indicates that you are feeling helpless and trapped by some situation. You feel that you are being held back, either physically or mentally. Alternatively, the dream may also suggest that you are feeling disconnected in some aspect of your life – work, relationship or home life

  • To dream that you transfer planes implies an important transitional phase in your life which will take you away from your intended path. These changes will take you to new directions and new heights of status and recognition

  • To see birds in your dream symbolizes your goals, aspirations and hopes. To dream of chirping and/or flying birds represents joy, harmony, ecstasy, balance, and love. It denotes a sunny outlook in life. You are experiencing spiritual freedom and psychological liberation. It is almost as if a weight has been lifted off your shoulders.

  • I also looked up Bonsai trees on Wikipedia and thought this was interesting:

The practice of bonsai development incorporates a number of techniques either unique to bonsai or, if used in other forms of cultivation, applied in unusual ways that are particularly suitable to the bonsai domain. These techniques include:

  • Leaf trimming, the selective removal of leaves (for most varieties of deciduous tree) or needles (for coniferous trees and some others) from a bonsai’s trunk and branches.
  • Pruning the trunk, branches, and roots of the candidate tree.
  • Wiring branches and trunks allows the bonsai designer to create the desired general form and make detailed branch and leaf placements.
  • Clamping using mechanical devices for shaping trunks and branches.
  • Grafting new growing material (typically a bud, branch, or root) into a prepared area on the trunk or under the bark of the tree.
  • Defoliation, which can provide short-term dwarfing of foliage for certain deciduous species.
  • Deadwood bonsai techniques such as jin and shari simulate age and maturity in a bonsai.

Bible verses I looked up this  morning:

The Great Tree Is Made Small and the Small Tree Great ] God’s Message came to me: “Son of man, make a riddle for the house of Israel. Tell them a story. Say, ‘God, the Master, says: “‘A great eagle with a huge wingspan and long feathers, In full plumage and bright colors, came to Lebanon And took the top off a cedar, broke off the top branch, Took it to a land of traders, and set it down in a city of shopkeepers. Then he took a cutting from the land and planted it in good, well-watered soil, like a willow on a riverbank. It sprouted into a flourishing vine, low to the ground. Its branches grew toward the eagle and the roots became established— A vine putting out shoots, developing branches.
  • Behind and underneath all this there is a holy, God-planted, God-tended root. If the primary root of the tree is holy, there’s bound to be some holy fruit. Some of the tree’s branches were pruned and you wild olive shoots were grafted in. Yet the fact that you are now fed by that rich and holy root gives you no cause to crow over the pruned branches. Remember, you aren’t feeding the root; the root is feeding you.
  • Psalm 91:4

He will cover you with his feathers,
        and under his wings you will find refuge;
his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.

All in all I think this is supposed to be a good dream. I am going to new places, I have packed everything I needed, and maybe the bonsai tree is to show that God is sill forming and controlling everything, and I can be free like the bird.

I don’t have to be weighed down, maybe this is validation that stepping back out of that role was a God decision.

What do you think? Anything I missed? Comment below.

Prayer for Today

Jesus, I still want this year, 2016, to be the year where I become stronger and stronger with my prayers. I declared this year’s word prayer and though I know I’ve gotten better, I’ve also gotten busy.

Today I pray over my mind and heart this week. I’m tired Lord, but you can be my strength.

I pray over my friend who is coming to Colour in NYC next week that she will get a fresh perspective and word from you God. I declare healing over her mind and her heart and that this will be the last year she struggles with addiction.

I lift up all these things to you today God.

Have your way.

12:00 pm Prayer

Jesus, my arm is feeling better today. Thank you. I’m wondering if there has been too much strain on my arm since I am at the computer all day. Please help me remember to take rest and take precautions to take care of myself.

I pray for my co-workers, that they will have a great day before them, and desire to learn about you.

I pray over my brother’s mind, that he would be less irritable and that his schizophrenia would not continue to get worse.

I pray that my mom while she is not working enough to get by, will draw closer to you and learn whatever lessons you are teaching her during this season.

I pray for my dad, that he would learn that his selfish behavior and drinking will not make him happy. The only hope for his life on Earth is you.

I lift all of these things up to you and out of my hands and control.

I wrote these verses down 7 months ago and they have been in my drafts since then. Well today is this little draft’s lucky day:

When I took an Evening College course through my church I learned that the purpose of 1 and 2 Chronicles is to retell the past to inspire hope in the present.

I could just sit under that alone. Couldn’t you.

Sometimes we need to remember the past, and how we survived events in our life so that we can look to the present and future with hope.

If God was good then, He will be good now. Amen?

Below were the two verses I was thinking about 7 months ago:

1 Chronicles 10 (MSG)

13-14 Saul died in disobedience, disobedient to God. He didn’t obey God’s words. Instead of praying, he went to a witch to seek guidance. Because he didn’t go to God for help, God took his life and turned the kingdom over to David son of Jesse.

1 Chronicles 16(MSG)

That was the day that David inaugurated regular worship of praise to God, led by Asaph and his company.

8-19 Thank God! Call out his Name!
Tell the whole world who he is and what he’s done!
Sing to him! Play songs for him!
    Broadcast all his wonders!
Revel in his holy Name,
    God-seekers, be jubilant!
Study God and his strength,
    seek his presence day and night;
Remember all the wonders he performed,
the miracles and judgments that came out of his mouth.
Seed of Israel his servant!
Children of Jacob, his first choice!
He is God, our God;
wherever you go you come on his judgments and decisions.
He keeps his commitments across thousands
of generations, the covenant he commanded,
The same one he made with Abraham,
    the very one he swore to Isaac;
He posted it in big block letters to Jacob,
    this eternal covenant with Israel:
“I give you the land of Canaan,
    this is your inheritance;
Even though you’re not much to look at,
    a few straggling strangers.”

20-22 They wandered from country to country,
    camped out in one kingdom after another;
But he didn’t let anyone push them around,
he stood up for them against bully-kings:
“Don’t you dare touch my anointed ones,
don’t lay a hand on my prophets.”

23-27 Sing to God, everyone and everything!
Get out his salvation news every day!
Publish his glory among the godless nations,
his wonders to all races and religions.
And why? Because God is great—well worth praising!
No god or goddess comes close in honor.
All the popular gods are stuff and nonsense,
    but God made the cosmos!
Splendor and majesty flow out of him,
strength and joy fill his place.

28-29 Shout Bravo! to God, families of the peoples,
in awe of the Glory, in awe of the Strength: Bravo!
Shout Bravo! to his famous Name,
lift high an offering and enter his presence!
Stand resplendent in his robes of holiness!

30-33 God is serious business, take him seriously;
he’s put the earth in place and it’s not moving.
So let Heaven rejoice, let Earth be jubilant,
and pass the word among the nations, “God reigns!”
Let Ocean, all teeming with life, bellow,
    let Field and all its creatures shake the rafters;
Then the trees in the forest will add their applause
to all who are pleased and present before God
—he’s on his way to set things right!

34-36 Give thanks to God—he is good
    and his love never quits.
Say, “Save us, Savior God,
round us up and get us out of these godless places,
So we can give thanks to your holy Name,
and bask in your life of praise.”
Blessed be God, the God of Israel,
    from everlasting to everlasting.

Then everybody said, “Yes! Amen!” and “Praise God!”

The takeaways I got, and was also challenged by were:

  • Because he didn’t go to God for help
  • inaugurated regular worship of praise to God
  • Remember all the wonders he performed

Sometimes I can forget what God has done. Not in a serious way, but just like, life gets busy. I never want to forget. That’s one of the reasons I started this blog. I don’t want to forget all that God has done for me, or feel deceived into thinking God does great things for others and I’m not his favorite.

You’re setting yourself up for a fall if you get into this way of thinking, trust me, I’ve been there.

Instead we need to always regularly worship and praise God no matter the season, remember all the wonders that he performed. If we don’t do this we risk turning to other things for our success. The first passage warns me that because he (Saul) didn’t go to God for help he forfeited what was rightfully his. Maybe I’m wrong but it sounds like God was blessing him with the kingdom, and instead of trusting God and what God gave him, God trusted someone else with it.

I never want that to happen to me.

God isn’t evil. But God wants you to be a good steward of your gifts and leadership. He doesn’t want you to wander around in the wilderness complaining about God and wanting to return to the garbage life you had before.

Let’s remember it’s all about him. And it will never stop being about him. Lest we forget.

Hey guys,

So I know life gets busy and I think it would be nice to send you guys weekly or monthly newsletters so you know if a new post has gone up or if there are any special announcements.

You will now see a pop up that will appear when you come to the site. Feel free to ignore it, but I would love you to enter it, so I can start sending out reminders.

Much love,

12:00 pm Prayer: 4/6/16

Jesus I lay my weary body at your feet today. I love my job, I love writing my blog, I love working on my 2017 project, I love working on various volunteer efforts, I don’t want any of these things to change as I believe they are all assignments from you.

Please give me the strength to get all of these things done well through your power and not my own.

Show me clearly what needs to be done each day and how to do it best.

I lift up my father and ex’s salvation to you.

I lift up my co-workers’ salvation to you.

I pray that my mom get a job that she likes and will have the desire to write and draw which are two things she never makes time to do.

I pray that there will be supernatural breakthrough in sex trafficking globally today. That you will give many girls a window of time today to run away and find safe haven in their cities and countries. I pray that you will blind the eyes of their captors and traffickers.

Have your way today Jesus. Unleash your grace and power and love to those who don’t know they need it.

In your name I ask these things.

German Forest Ranger Finds That Trees Have Social Networks, Too

I read the above article a few months ago now, and knew I wanted to post it here.

If you’re new here, you’ll start to realize that I love random stuff like this. Whether it’s an article, a movie, a dream, something someone said, I feel like I can see God in everything. It’s definitely a gift that I’ve received from Him in the last several years and I find it really nerdy and exciting.

Anyway, back to the trees.

These three facts from the article were really cool:

  • “You see how the thick branches point away from each other? That’s so they don’t block their buddy’s light.”
  • “Sometimes, pairs like this are so interconnected at the roots that when one tree dies, the other one dies, too.”
  • Working together in networks and sharing resources, they increase their resistance.

I’m actually almost interested in reading his book!

Anyway, why does this matter to us?

Because I think all of creation is made the same, because God is a creator and everything he makes, makes sense. For starters, God wants us to work together, not compete or block someone else’s light. Just like the trees. Sometimes when you are connected to the wrong things, you suffer. When you are connected to God and the church you thrive because it is Biblical.

Matthew 5 MSG: “You’re blessed when you can show people how to cooperate instead of compete or fight. That’s when you discover who you really are, and your place in God’s family.”

Galatians 5 MSG “19-21 It is obvious what kind of life develops out of trying to get your own way all the time: repetitive, loveless, cheap sex; a stinking accumulation of mental and emotional garbage; frenzied and joyless grabs for happiness; trinket gods; magic-show religion; paranoid loneliness; cutthroat competition; all-consuming-yet-never-satisfied wants; a brutal temper; an impotence to love or be loved; divided homes and divided lives; small-minded and lopsided pursuits; the vicious habit of depersonalizing everyone into a rival; uncontrolled and uncontrollable addictions; ugly parodies of community. I could go on.”

1 Corinthians 4 MSG 7-8 For who do you know that really knows you, knows your heart? And even if they did, is there anything they would discover in you that you could take credit for? Isn’t everything you have and everything you are sheer gifts from God? So what’s the point of all this comparing and competing? You already have all you need. You already have more access to God than you can handle. Without bringing either Apollos or me into it, you’re sitting on top of the world—at least God’s world—and we’re right there, sitting alongside you!

Ezekiel 17 MSG: This vine sent out its roots toward him from the place where it was planted. Its branches reached out to him so he could water it from a long distance. It had been planted in good, well-watered soil, And it put out branches and bore fruit, and became a noble vine.

Acts 4 MSG 32-33 The whole congregation of believers was united as one—one heart, one mind! They didn’t even claim ownership of their own possessions. No one said, “That’s mine; you can’t have it.” They shared everything. The apostles gave powerful witness to the resurrection of the Master Jesus, and grace was on all of them.

34-35 And so it turned out that not a person among them was needy. Those who owned fields or houses sold them and brought the price of the sale to the apostles and made an offering of it. The apostles then distributed it according to each person’s need.

Walking On Glass

I wanted to write this down the day I awoke from this dream but it’s been very busy for me the past month and I haven’t been able to write anything I’ve wanted to! Apologies on that.

So here we go.

I haven’t had a recognizable “God dream” in a while. But I definitely think that this was one of them.

On one Monday night in March I had a very short dream. I was walking barefoot outside and sort of..taking in my surroundings and enjoying the fresh air and scenery. I was alone but in the distance I saw a small group of people I knew and sat down on a rock. I put my one leg, or rather ankle, on top of my knee, somewhat cross-legged, and saw something shimmering on the sole of my right foot. I began to inspect and realized it was a shard of glass. I pulled it out. I realized there were lots of them, some big and small, some made me bleed, some hurt, some didn’t. And then I woke up.

I reflected on a few things in the Bible and random thoughts and this is what I came up with:

  • Feet shod with the gospel
  • Pilgrimage
  • Exodus 3 barefoot because standing on Holy Ground

Here are some random links Google discovered for me:

I still can’t figure out exactly what I think of it, and was waiting so long to post it, but I don’t want to wait any longer. Would be cool if you had any thoughts on it. If you do, post below!
