SOAP 3.14.17

Good morning!⠀

This morning I had my tea and am ready to dive into a SOAP for you guys.⠀

For those who don’t know, SOAP stands for:⠀

Scripture⠀
Observation⠀
Application⠀
Prayer⠀

Scripture: James 1:26-27 MSG

Observation: Tearing people down isn’t real religion. It doesn’t please God.

Application: The NIV says that people who can’t keep “tight rein on their tongues deceive themselves, and their religion is worthless”. So many times in life, we can be the victim of criticism and unfortunately some of the ugliest are comments on social media from one Christian to another.

Prayer: God help us all to never use our words to rip apart someone. We are not better than one another. Religion like this will never please you. Instead let us help encourage one another, genuinely caring about their well being, instead of ripping them apart for perceived faults. Ultimately love wins. Looking after orphans wins. Keeping pure from the world’s pollution wins.

My thoughts on Session 2: “He Chose to Forgive Us”

  • Nails bring things together that were separated: make things whole
  • Strange to think that Jesus looked at the hands that nailed him to the cross and saw God’s hand
  • Ironic that as a carpenter Jesus worked with wood and was nailed to a wooden cross.

Questions:

  • Do you think the hand of God was who swung the hammer into Jesus?
  • What part stuck out the most to you?

My biggest takeaway from this was remembering that the love of God kept Jesus on the cross so He could be with us in Heaven forever.

My thoughts on Session 1: “He Chose to be One of Us”

  • Jesus wore the crown of thorns which is identical to the curse in Genesis on the plants
  • My favorite Disney movie is “Beauty and the Beast” I never saw Jesus in this story

Questions:

  • What part resonated with you the most?
  • Do you believe in Lent?

My biggest takeaway from this was remembering that the crown of thorns was a GIFT. That changed my perspective a lot. And so often at my church, the women’s conferences are full of flower crowns or literal crowns, and it makes it even more powerful to think that Jesus enables us to wear these crowns and to be joyful because he took the lesser crown for us.
